Never was a truer statement ever spoken. I wish that I’d asked my parents and grandparents more about our family histories. I really regret not doing that while I had the opportunity.

Charles Ash as an infant

So much knowledge has been lost because of that, knowledge that I will never be able to obtain. However, during my family research, I have learned a few things that I did not know before.

My grandfather, Charles Ash, always told me that the family was of German origin. I’d raised an eyebrow at the time, but did not argue with his claim. He seemed quite certain of his facts. To me, the surname Ash seemed very English sounding, not German at all. But that little bit of information was stored away in the back of my mind until I needed it years later when I started to investigate and record the family history.

Charles Ash as a
child

I discovered that my three times great grandparents, Johann and Rosina, immigrated to Canada sometime between 1843 and 1845 from Alsace, France with two (possibly three) small children. Isn’t that interesting?

By doing further research into the history of Alsace, I found that the territory has long been disputed over by France and Germany and ‘possession’ of it went back and forth many times over the centuries.

Charles Ash as a
young man

Now the pieces are starting to fall together. Apparently, the surname was originally spelled Esch, as well.. The family does have German origins.

NOTE: You used to be able to attach a document to your blog but that does not seem to be an option anymore. My great-grandparents, David Franklin Middleton and Sebbie Rowntree were married on
September 26, 1901 in York County, ON. The official records do not specify the
exact location. There are some interesting facts that do appear there, however,
but I will get to that.

I was not aware that David and Sebbie were so closely
related. They were first cousins, once removed. Robert and Ann Middleton had two children (perhaps more)
Robert and Elizabeth. The younger Robert married Nancy Ann Emerson in 1867 in
Pickering. Among their children was David. Elizabeth married George Topper and
one of their daughters was Sarah Jane Topper who went on to marry Robert
William Rowntree in 1878. Sebbie was their daughter. Hence, David was the grandson
of Robert and Ann, while Sebbie was the great-granddaughter of Robert and Ann.

Now we go back to the official records, pictured here, with
a close up of the entry about the marriage of David and Sebbie. You will see
that Sebbie’s name is entered as Sylva. Her name was unusual and clerks filling
out these official forms were unclear how to spell it. I’ve seen it written in
various records as Bebbie, Libbie, Jebbie, Zebeah, Sophie, Zebbie, Sebbia and even
Zebra. I also notice that their places of birth were ‘not given’ which seemed
odd to me. Every other entry on the page has birth places entered. David and
Sebbie certainly knew where they were born, so why did they not give them to
the clerk to record?

Then I came to the column where their parents were
listed. For Sebbie, on the lines for
both her mother and father was written ‘not given’. For David, his father is
listed as Robert Middleton which is correct but his mothers’ name is listed as Sarah
Jane Topper. That is Sebbie’s mother though, and the first cousin of David. I’m
just speculating here but were they trying to hide the fact that they were
cousins? Was it legal at the time to marry someone so closely related to you? I’m
not sure.

David and Sebbie
in their later years

On top of that, I imagine it was a hastily arranged marriage
when they discovered that Sebbie was pregnant, three months along. How do I
know this? Let’s do the math together. David and Sebbie were married on
September 26, 1901. Their first child, Robert (Bert) Edwin was born on March
26, 1902 which by my calculation was exactly six months after the nuptials. I’m
not judging anyone, don’t get me wrong, just bringing the facts to light.

There is more of the story to tell, but I will leave that
for future posts. Let me just say, that by all accounts their union was a happy
one. And at the end of the day, that is all that really matters, isn't it?

I was quite surprised to find such a marvelously, hand-crafted piece there. And it was only $2.50! Of course, it went straight into my cart and I purchased it along with a few other goodies I found that day.
How did this get from New Hampshire or Newfoundland to a thrift store in Ontario? I bet this little wall hanging has a story to tell. Did it ever get to its intended recipient? And if it did, who would let let go of such a heart-felt gift? Did the recipient pass away and it got donated with the rest of the stuff her family did not want? Was there an irreparable rift between the friends, so bad that all reminders of the other were discarded? I will likely never know.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Kristie Marcotte takes a 6" X 6" paper pad and makes as many cards as she can out of it, usually between thirty and forty. I have completed two and I'm fairly pleased with the results. I started out with blank white note cards and built up the layers. I have a lot of scraps from the papers I've cut for my October Daily and they are just the right size these note cards but too small for anything else. I'm happy to be able to use up a bunch of the paper scraps.
I don't have one of those. I picked up some double sided tape from the dollar store to experiment with. Take my advice, save yourself the time, effort and money...don't get cheap double sided tape. The layers kept separating from each other and I had to use some glue to stick them back down. Very frustrating.
I did look at the ATG tape dispensers but the price is a bit prohibitive this week, especially when I know there is a 55% off coupon for next Saturday. Since I'm going to be out of town next weekend, I will have to ask someone to pick it up for me.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I can see myself making some of my Christmas cards this year now...for those that I know will appreciate the time and craftsmanship that goes into them. With all the plans for October, it will have to be after that. I have enough on my plate right now. Stay tuned though, it will happen.
Apparently, the ratio between the dimensions of the image of the artist trading cards (2.5" X 3") and the 4" X 6" photo paper do not match. I did a test print, only to find that the sides of the image were cut off. That is not going to work for me, you need to see the whole image not only part of it.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Back to the drawing board. I re-worked the photos in ThumbsPlus, adding more depth to the colours, and put them all into a Word document for the second time. I sent the file to Staples Print Services and hoped for the best. Well, they did come out better this time, more vibrant, but still a bit grainy. I think this is my best option, so I'm going to stop stressing about it and go with the flow.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I picked up a pack of the Avery Photo Pages while I was at Staples. They are not quite what I expected. You can see by the photo that there is a lot of 'empty' space on the sides and at the bottom of the two 4" X 6" photo pockets on each page.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The side spaces are open at the top so I can slide a scrap piece of co-ordinating paper in each one. I will figure out what to do with the middle and bottom spaces later as I start filling the album.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Overall, I like the larger format. I've decided to go with the Avery Photo Pages in a black binder. I was going to purchase Avery page protectors and trading card sleeves that would 'match' the photo pages but I think I will use what I already have on hand...Staples brand page protectors and Ultra brand trading card sleeves. No need to incur extra expense, although I will need at least one more pack of the Avery Photo Pages.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The project is moving along, albeit slowly. I think I might try to incorporate the cover page I already made in the smaller format to this new size. October is almost here and I already feel behind! I'll keep you posted.
I <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">cannot find ANY place that prints wallet size photos. Can you <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">believe that? So, if I have to get full size 4" X 6" prints, the <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">planner binder that I wanted to use will not work. The pages are <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">simply not big enough.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">My original plan was to get wallet size photos of the 31 ATCs that <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I made for the Halloween Howl swap I'm in. I want to include them <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">each day along with the one that I receive from my partner. It <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">seems like a simple enough plan, right?
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">When that didn't work out, I put all the pics in a Word document <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">and sent them to Staples Print Services. While that option was <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">much cheaper than photo printing, the final product was a bit disappointing. They do <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">not use photo printers or papers. They only have colour laser <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">printers and cardstock. The pictures were grainy and not as <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">vibrant as I wanted.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

I would have to <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">find the plastic page inserts though. The only drawback; i<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">t is a large binder, and I'm thinking it <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">might be a bit cumbersome to work in. <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The plastic insert <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">sheets are 12" X 12" and divided into different size pockets. The <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">only place I can find them is online but it is an option I will look <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">at.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Avery Photo Pages might work too. They would fit into a regular <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">size binder. I will have to head over to Staples to have a look at <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">them. I could use nine pocket trading card sheets and regular <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">size page protectors for variety with that option, which would be <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">nice.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">It is already September, so I have to make a decision fairly soon. I <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">want to have a lot of the pre-planning done before October gets <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">here. I have a lot of Halloween swaps that I've signed up for that <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">need to be completed also. I'm going to be busy.Bonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13200423008739661138noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7880100273708763164.post-45696922679953692222018-09-02T18:18:00.000-04:002018-09-02T20:35:00.746-04:00Long Weekend Craft Fun<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I love long weekends! That extra day off work feels like a
great gift. More time to rest, relax and, most importantly, craft. I have
already finished three projects and have couple more started.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">This Halloween pocket letter is for a swap organized by Dani,
the owner of the PopFizzPaper Crafty Club<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">.<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"> I discovered Dani on YouTube<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"> and
love all her videos. You should go take a look. They are fun and very inspiring.
it up at Michaels last year after Halloween for 75% off. Once again, there are a lot of
diecuts decorating the pockets. I'm getting the chance to use several of my newest dies. I'm very happy with how it turned out. I hope my partner likes it.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Speaking of Michaels, they had a 55% of coupon good for four days, from Friday to Monday. You have to know that I took advantage of that. The first two days, i picked up more 6" X 6" Halloween paper pads. I like that size for pocket letters as the prints are smaller than the 12" X 12" paper pads.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I finished off an autumn themed mini file folder for a swap on one of my Facebook groups. It was a quick and easy project that was fun to do. You can see a tutorial here if you are interested in giving it a try.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Tomorrow's goal will be an autumn themed pocket letter for a YouTube swap I signed up for. I want to make good progress on it before the big rush of Halloween craft projects begins. I've signed up for a LOT of Halloween swaps.
First and foremost, it makes me happy. It
helps me combat the loneliness and depression that often sneaks in. On a really
stressful day it helps me to relax and unwind; put the rest of the crazy world
behind me for awhile. It is also a very useful tool in my pain management
arsenal. An active mind and busy hands push the pain into the background,
instead of front and centre.
me, watching my every move with eagle eyes, negatively criticizing everything I
do, eavesdropping on every word I speak and generally dragging me down.
Crafting transports me to a better place full of fun and laughter and it is a
great place to escape to when I am able. It keeps me sane (although some may
dispute that).
I purposely stayed up until midnight last night to get all of the 31 ATCs that I made for a mega swap scanned and processed. My plan was to put them on a USB key and take them to one of the photo printing kiosks at Walmart this morning to get wallet size prints of them all.
For starters, three of the four kiosks were out of order. So, I loaded all the files onto the one remaining station. But their kiosks will no longer print wallet size photos, which is what I wanted for my October Daily. I was NOT amused!

Time to formulate a new plan. When I came home, I booted up the computer. I inserted and re-sized all thirty-one files into a Word document. My next step was to go to Staples Print Services online, load up the file, select the options I wanted and send to be printed.
The pages for my October Daily did get cut out yesterday as planned and the holes have been punched in them. I think that I will have to incorporate some marigold coloured diecuts on each page or the clash of colour between the pages and the planner binder will be too dramatic. Perhaps I will punch out marigold reinforcements for all of the holes also. That might work. What do you think?
It’s a cross between a daily
diary, a scrapbook and an art journal to document the month of October. The main
theme throughout the book is Halloween. I LOVE Halloween! Anyone who knows me
can verify that. This was a trend started about 3 years ago on YouTube. It will
be the first year I am participating.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">You can find an October Daily 101 blog post here by Serena Bee, who has one of my favourite YouTube channels, Serena Bee Creative. It is full of tips and ideas to get you started. She also has a list of daily prompts if you cannot decide what to document each day. Use them in order or randomly as needed. There is a video associated with this blog post that I highly recommend watching if you are interested in trying this.
planner binder for the project. With that in mind, I went to Michaels last
night to see if they had their 12” X 12” Halloween cardstock paper pads out
yet. A few people had posted photos on Facebook of what they found at their
local locations, so there was a 50/50 chance that mine had them out too.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Hurray! There was a small, Halloween papercrafting display in one of the middle aisles that included what I was looking for. There was also some themed stickers and washi tape available. Michaels has two paper collections this year. One is called Hocus Pocus and the other is called Moonlit Manor. The latter one is very monochromatic with primarily black, white and shades of grey only. It did not really appeal to me although I know that some people really like that dark and gloomy look.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I preferred the Hocus Pocus collection using mostly black,
white and orange, with very vintage looking images and icons. I purchased both
of the 12” X 12” paper pads in the collection for 50% off the regular price. One
is double sided with a different design on each side and the other pad is one
sided with ‘treatments’. That means that some of the images are slightly raised
and glossy, while the rest of the page has a matte finish. I will use the one
sided paper for Halloween pocket letters, greeting cards and ATCs.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The pages for my October Daily will be cut out from the
double sided pages. Pre-planning is crucial for a project like this. Everyone
who has participated before advises it. Having a lot of the design work done
for each day will make it quicker to pull together in October. I do have some
ideas of what I want to include on the page each day but I can always include
more things as I progress, adding extra pages if required. There is a Facebook
page (Halloween & October Daily Inspiration) you can join for ideas and
encouragement if you want to try this.
the pages cut out. Each page will be 5.25” X 8.25”. Next, I will punch out the
holes so they will fit in the planner. I may also punch out reinforcements in a
contrasting cardstock and glue them on to make the holes more durable.

projects. Over the last few months, I’ve added a ‘few’ new cutting dies to my
collection. Okay...perhaps more than a few, mostly Halloween and cat themed
ones so far. And let’s be honest here, I’m sure that I will be adding many more
down the road. I had to come up with a way to store them so that they are all
in one place, and loosely sorted by category.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">The metal cutting dies are now all on magnetic sheets in
page protectors in a couple of binders. The initial cost for setting this up
was a bit high but now I can just add more pages as needed. It seems to be
working really well for me. How do you store all your dies? Let me know in the
comment section below. I’m always willing to look at a better way if there is
one.

Shabby Chic ATCs

Take, for example, artist trading cards. When a friend of mine first shared with me that she was creating these miniature 'works of art', I thought she was crazy. I mean, why would you want to waste your time making these things? It made no sense to me.

Two years later, I discover the world of mail art and I finally 'got' it. I start making ATCs to swap and trade with others. I now have several large binders FULL of artists creations from around the world.

Then, let's move on to pocket letters. When I first came upon these through a Facebook group I belong to, I could not see myself EVER doing them. I was a bit intimidated by the thought of attempting one, in fact. It was a trendy fad that would fade as quickly as it appeared, I thought. A friend continued to work on me, in spite of my protestations, trying to pique my interest in them.

Winter Themed Pocket Letter

Once again, about two years later, I decide to give it a shot. What the heck, why not? The more I learned about pocket letters, the more appealing they became to me. I watched a lot of YouTube video tutorials and I thought it was finally time to experiment with one.

Big sigh...I got hooked again! Now, I am participating in multiple pocket letter swaps and I have a couple of regular pen pals that I exchange with too. I'm having a lot of fun sending and receiving them. Check out this video to see a Valentine's Day pocket letter that I sent to one of my partners.

Thank You Card for Swap

Let's move on to greeting cards. The lovely cards posted by others on Pinterest amazed me, but I could NEVER create anything like that. I was convinced of it. I'm simply not talented enough for that, I told myself.

I resisted for a LONG time, until just recently, when a friend tricked/bribed me to join a greeting card swap on a group we both belong to. I foolishly took the bait, and signed up for it. Now, I want to make lots more greeting cards for every occasion.

You know, now that I think about it, it was the SAME friend who got me interested in ALL of those things! She's had a diabolical plan all along, hasn't she? YOU know who you are, friend.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Every year at this time we look back on the year past with fondness or regret and begin to plan for the twelve months ahead with an anticipation that rarely lasts past the end of January.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">We often set ourselves up for failure with goals loftier that we can reasonably achieve. Then when we do not succeed our enthusiasm wanes.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I'm trying not to do that this year. I believe that my list of goals are reasonably achievable. I wish to make some simple lifestyle changes to make it easier for both my body and soul.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I want to focus more on taking care of myself and not worrying as much about looking after everyone else. That strategy only wears me down and does not leave enough in me for self care.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

By the end of the year, I anticipate a major improvement in my house and my peace of mind. I want to downsize my way to a happier, more fulfilled life. Here is my motto for the year, Don't put it down, put it away!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Crafting will remain a big part of my life. I am happiest when creating and sharing my art with others. I've changed my main focus from artist trading cards to pocket letters over the last couple of months, although I will continue to participate in a few ATC swaps. That includes the annual 31 ATC Halloween swap and a monthly swap with a group in Alberta.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I have several pen pals across Canada that I am exchanging pocket letters with now, and hopefully, building lasting friendships. I was introduced to this fun way to send happy mail a couple of years ago but I did not realize how much I would enjoy it. To learn more about this new trend, do a search on YouTube and you will find tons of tutorials.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

What are your plans for the upcoming twelve months? Whatever they are, I wish you great success and much happiness. Have a great year!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Faced with that same issue this past weekend, I came up with a plan for a few of those scraps. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Several 12" X 12" pieces of patterned card stock had been cut down into 2.5" X 3.5" size cards for pocket letter inserts. What I was left with were several scraps that were approximately 1.25" X 12".
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I remembered a tutorial that I'd watched on YouTube some time ago and decided to try to use up those odd shaped pieces to make rosettes. I scored each piece every 1/4", then folded along the creases accordion style.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">After gluing one end to the other, I manipulated them into the round rosettes and glued them in place with a punched out piece of card stock on the back side. On the front, I glued another circle piece of card stock, then added the chipboard sticker on top of that to finish them off.
This includes kitchen tables, dressers, nightstands, coffee tables, end tables, chairs, desks, countertops and even the bed in the guest room if you have one. There are many other surfaces left unmentioned too.
And piling MORE stuff on top of the other stuff is so much easier than actually putting it away in its proper place.

But wait, shouldn't that the first part of this equation? START BY ASSIGNING AN APPROPRIATE PLACE FOR EVERTHING, making sure that these spots are as easy and obvious as the surfaces we are currently leaving them on. Isn't that an interesting concept? (sarcasm intended)

However, once you are overwhelmed by the surface clutter, how do you escape from it? The problem looks so huge! The situation seems so bad that we often give up on it. That is where I have been for a long time now, stuck with those terrible feelings of hopelessness and inadequacy. I don't like feeling that way. Have you been there too? I imagine everyone has been at some time in their life.

I've reached the point where I am resolved to 'fix' it. I'm ready. One way or another, I want to eliminate the stress associated with an untidy home. I'm tired of feeling guilty about living in a messy space. I'd like to be able to invite friends over without being embarrassed about my surroundings.

The key to success, I believe, is to take baby steps. It’s easier to have one goal than many, so I will stick to clearing one surface at a time until it's done, then moving onto another one until the whole job is completed. It doesn't matter how long it takes as long as there is continuous progress made and no regression back to the way it was.

It did not get to this state in a day, it will take more than a day to clear it all up. I will set aside one or more 15 minute blocks of time each day to tackle the clutter. No more excuses! Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night will stop this woman from the completion of my appointed tasks. I'm determined! Wish me luck.Bonniehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13200423008739661138noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7880100273708763164.post-80173195287895042612017-04-19T19:05:00.000-04:002017-04-19T19:26:48.645-04:00Mixed Media Weekend Project<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I am continually watching YouTube videos for artistic inspiration. I got the spark last week from this video by Shira Manor on a technique for creating mixed media ATCs. I did not have all the same products and materials that she used but, as always, I worked with what I have, including drywall tape, modeling paste, embossing powders, old book text, acrylic paint and washi tape. The base is 100 lb. watercolour paper.
I'm not overly thrilled with it but as experiments go, pretty successful. I first tried this emboss resist technique with clear embossing powder but did not like the results at all. So, I tried it with white embossing powder. I used two colours of Distress Ink pads for the resist, Fire Brick and Walnut Stain. I edged it with black archival ink and called it done.
This cold, wet, snowy weather is not my idea of a nice, spring day! Wouldn't you agree?

The hearts form the flowers, and the other bits finish them off. I edged around the tag with black archival ink. Very quick and easy to put together. And I think that I am back on track with the current week!
To watch Bea's Heart Art Week 14, click here. She has been using a lot of techniques and materials that I've never used before and hope to try some of them out in future art projects.

I'm so happy that I've finally caught up. March was a challenging month for me and I lost a bit of my creative mojo. But it's back!!
The worst part of the job is removing the stamps from the paper.

First, you have to soak them in very warm water until they separate from the paper. Then, they are placed on a paper towel to air dry. Next, they need to have a heavy book set on top of them overnight to flatten them. They tend to curl up as they dry.

I punch out 1.25" diameter scalloped circles that I fold to get eight equal sections, like a pie. This is my placement guide for the postage stamps. Here are the ones that I've finished this week pictured with one of the original stamps they were made from.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As you can see, how you orient the postage stamp onto the guide can completely change the look of the mandala. Each stamp has four sides, so you can get four different looks.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">For week 12, I pulled some gelli prints from the recycling bin. These ones were less than acceptable in my eyes, at least. I tore them into narrow strips and randomly glued them onto a piece of cardstock. Then I cut the hearts out of the resulting collage and glued them down onto the plain pink background.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I will admit, when I first received the package of beads from Sally, I had virtually NO idea how or what I would create with them. I had expected to receive only one focal bead, but instead she sent two focal beads and a few extras.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I scoured pages and pages of images on Google and Pinterest searching for inspiration. I did not think I was going to be able to create something that would do justice to these lovely beads and was beginning to panic. Thank goodness, I finally found what I was looking for.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Once I had the idea in mind, it was time to go to my bead stash to find the co-ordinating beads needed to complete the piece. The idea was to use only beads from your stash and not run out to buy new ones.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">i did pretty good. The only thing I had to purchase for this project was the bead caps, as I had none of those. Here is the completed necklace.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">There are some serious construction flaws in this piece, a few things that I did not clearly think through before plunging into making it. Life tends to get in the way of our crafty ventures sometimes, doesn't it? My intention is to work on Week 11 and 12 over the weekend. We'll see how it goes.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here is the image that was the trigger for this weeks' design. I certainly have more than enough used postage stamps around here! I acquire them not only from my happy mail but also from work. The accounting department saves them all for me. I've worked there for seven years, so you can imagine how many I've accumulated. I have to find more ways to use them in my art.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I kept it pretty simple this week. The hearts were cut out of cardstock and then I glued the postage stamps randomly on them until they were completely covered, trimming away the excess. The tag background was created using my Gelli plate. I inked around both the tag and the hearts to make them stand out.
I think the original creator, Janette Lane, explains it best...
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">'I created Pocket Letters™ as a new way to send letters to your new or existing penpals. Basically, you fill all the pockets of a 9 Pocket Trading Card Protector and send the whole page to someone who wants to swap with you. This can be a one-time exchange or you can keep exchanging Pocket Letters indefinitely. You fill the pockets with anything you like (stickers, tea bags, a note, washi tape samples, pictures, etc.) A short note or letter is included and tucked into one of the pockets. Then the Pocket Letter is folded up and sent in a standard 10 size envelope. It's the perfect way to send and collect letters from other Pocket Letter Pals (ie people who are sending mail in this format) around the world and a convenient way to store them. They fit perfectly in a binder!'
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">You can find more information, some video tutorials and freebies on her blog.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I'll be honest, I was always a bit intimidated by the prospect of creating pocket letters. Some of the ones I'd seen on YouTube and Facebook looked so elaborate. It did not look like anything that I could possibly do.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">Fast forward to today...one online video turned my doubt into certainty this week. And here are my first two pocket letters. The empty pockets on the back are where the letters will go.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I pulled out another background stamp to add the next layer. I used music sheet to cut out the heart, gave it a red paint wash and mounted it on cardstock for dimension. I went around the edges of the tag and the heart with the black archival ink.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">My Dymo label maker was utilized again for the quote. As a last minute thought, I pulled out a small acrylic heart stamp and archival ink to add the two hearts at the top and bottom.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">I'm not particularly fond of the final result. It looks too dark to me. In retrospect, I should have used a red ink pad for the stamping I did with the scrap piece of foam.
